Last week we looked at the Wall Crab that comes out to bite helpless sailors in King Kong. We managed to find the pic that designer Greg Broadmore worked on as its inspiration in the Kongcept Art Gallery...

Greg explains:

"This is an earlier illustration of the same concept that Christian Pearce illustrated, a Crustacean that lives in the pit wall and comes out to grab a helpless sailor. It's inspired by the original movie where there are many creepy crawlies living in the pit, we only see a hint of that sequence because the majority of it was cut from the theatrical release, but it seemed like a natural thing to do.

The idea of creatures, insects, crustaceans (like this one) was a much discussed design concept when we were all working on the early pit scene illustrations. I always imagined that the creature was smaller than a man in size but exceptionally strong, so that when it grabbed a sailor and dragged him back it would break his bones and spine as he folded into a hole that shouldn't fit him.

The concept of the pit was to make it the most horrific, disgusting and violent place you could imagine. I think the final film managed to do that!"
